11. Calgary Recreation and Culture Association for
Seniors
The mandate of this volunteer organization is to promote
sport and recreation for people 55 and over. This group
organizes events for the Calgary zone (zone 3). On odd
numbered years the Association sponsors winter and summer
"Fun and Games" which encompass competitions in many sports
and games such as bowling, skiing, swimming, snooker,
bridge, and cribbage. These "Fun and Games" serve to
maintain enthusiasm and muscle tone for the big event, the
Ol-lympyx, which are held on even numbered years. (Only the
Calgary zone uses the term Ol-lympyx.) Winners of Ol-lympyx
events are eligible to go to the Alberta Senior Games
organized by the Alberta Senior Citizens Sport and
Recreation Association.

The Calgary Seniors' Resource Society was formed in July,
1995 by the amalgamation of four seniors services: Senior
Citizens Central Council, Calgary Community Support Services
for Seniors, the Committee on Alcohol Abuse Prevention for
Seniors (CAAPS), and Outreach Program for Eastern Core
Seniors (OPECS). The purpose of the society is to provide
information and support to seniors particularly in those
areas not covered by other services.

Centre. It is not necessary to be a member of the Jewish
Centre in order to meet with the Friendship Circle only to
take part in the fitness activities. Other activities
include cards, games, musical activities. Membership: 50.
There is a second group for seniors called Prime Time which
meets evenings and weekends, usually outside the centre.

Kerby Centre is a multi-purpose social service, health,
recreational, and educational facility operated by, and for,
all Calgarians 60 years of age and over. Here they can come
together to fulfill many of their social, physical and
intellectual needs; here they can expand their interests,
tap their potential and develop new interests. Kerby Centre
provides a resource facility for all senior citizens whether
they are members of the Centre or not. Volunteers and paid
staff provide community consultation, assistance in planning
and organizing, volunteer leadership, training, and data
collection and processing. Membership: 5000+.

and the assets will be disbursed. This society is dedicated
to showcasing senior talent, promoting alternative forms of

organizing the Seniors' Day event at the Winter Festival.

origins that come from such countries as Pakistan, Nepal,

The group was formed in late 1992 to promote the welfare of
south asian seniors and will act largely as an advisory
