CCNA - Windows95 PPP Setup Information

The following instructions can be used with Windows 95 Internet software to connect to the CCNA PPP dialin service.

Configuring your Modem

Click Start button
Choose Settings, then Control Panel and click to open
In Control Panel window, double-click Modems icon
In Install New Modem window, click Next button.

If a modem is installed, the name will appear in the "Verify Modem" window list.

If Windows 95 identifies the modem correctly, click Next to verify
(if the wrong modem, click Change, and find correct modem)

In Location Information window:
Select Canada[1] in "I am in:" field
Type 403 in "The area code is:" field
Select Tone dialing if using a Touch-Tone phone.
Click Next button
Click Finish button
If modem appears in Modem Properties window list, click OK to close
Close Control Panel window (choose Close under File menu)

Close all open windows

Automatic Re-dialing within Win 95

Due to the increasing use of the Calgary Community-Net, Occasionally you might get a busy signal. Windows 95 can be set to automatically redial until a connection is made or a certain # of attempts are completed.

Double-click My Computer icon
Double-click Dial-Up Networking folder
If Dial-up Networking is not available, proceed to Installing the Dial-up network program.

If it is available....
Click on the Connection Menu and Settings.
Enable Redial and set # of attempts to 100.
Set Time between redials to 4 sec.
Click OK
Close all open windows.

Installing the Dial-Up Networking program

Start Windows 95
Click Start button
Choose Programs, then Accessories.

If Dial-Up Networking does not appear in the Accessories sub-menu, then it is not installed. To install, continue with the following instructions. If it is installed, proceed to Installing a Dial-Up Adapter.

To install Dial-up Networking Program

Choose Settings, then Control Panel and click to open.
In Control Panel window, double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon
Click Windows Setup tab
Select Communications
Click Details button
Select Dial-Up Networking and click check box ON.
Click OFF all other check boxes
(**unless another type of communication connection is needed.)
Click OK button, in Communications window
Click OK button, in Add/Remove Programs Properties window
Insert Windows 95 disks if asked, and click OK
Click OK button in Dial-Up Networking Setup window.

When finished, Dial-Up Networking should appear under the Programs Accessories sub-menu. To verify:

Click Start button
Choose Programs, then Accessories sub-menu.

To Finish, Close all open windows.


Installing a Dial-Up Adapter

Click Start button
Choose Settings, then Control Panel
Double-click the Network icon.

In the "Network components" list you should see Dial-Up Adapter.

Check if Dial-Up Adapter is installed. If installed, proceed to Configuing the TCP/IP Protocol.

To install the Dial-Up Adapter

Click Add button
In the "Select Network Component Type" window, Select Adapter and click Add button
Select Microsoft from "Manufacturers:" list
Select Dial-Up Adapter from "Network Adapters:" list
Click OK button

In the "Network components" list you should now see Dial-Up Adapter.

Configuring the TCP/IP Protocol

In the "Network components" list you should see TCP/IP, if not proceed to install.

Click Add button
In the "Select Network Component Type" window, select Protocol and click Add button
Select Microsoft in "Manufacturers:" list
Select TCP/IP in "Network Protocols:" list
Click OK button

Delete any other networking programs that may have been created during the Windows 95 installation such as Netbeui, Client for Netware Network, etc..
(To delete, select the program and click the Remove button.) The only program you want to see in the window is Dial-Up Adapter.
** Keep any other network connections you need.

In "Network Configuration" window, select TCP/IP
Click Properties button
Select DNS Configuration tab, Click Disable DNS
(all of this information will be setup in the "New Connection" later)
Click OK button (it may be hidden at bottom of screen), or press the Enter key.

When Dial-Up Adapter and TCP/IP Protocol appear in "Network Configuration" window:

Click OK to finish the installation
Insert Windows 95 disks if asked, and click OK
When asked to restart your computer, remove any disks, and click Yes

Creating the CCNA PPP service Connection icon

The following instructions explain how to create the CCNA PPP service icon.

Double-click My Computer icon on desktop.
Double-click Dial-Up Networking folder
Double-click Make New Connection
Click Next button in Welcome to Dial-Up Networking window.
Type CCNA PPP in "Type a name for the computer you are dialing:" field
Click Configure button
Set "Port:" to communications port your PC uses (eg., COM2)
Click Options tab
Click Bring up terminal window after dialing check box ON.
( NOTE: if you have the CCNA Script and Dial-up Scripting is installed, clear the above box)
Click OK button
Click Next button

In the Make New Connection window:
Type 403 under "Area code:"
Type 289-9378 under "Telephone number:"
Select Canada[1] under "Country Code:"
Click Next button
Click Finish button

Click once on CCNA PPP icon in Dial-Up Networking folder
Choose Properties under the File menu from Dial-Up Networking folder menu bar
Unless it's long distance, Clear the "use area code ..." box
Click Server Type button

Select PPP.Windows 95... under "Type of Dial-Up Server:" field

In the "Advanced options"
Log on to network should be Cleared if no LAN
Log on to network should be Checked if using a LAN
Enable software compression should be Checked
Uncheck ALL other "Advanced options"

In "Allowed network protocols:"
TCP/IP Should be Checked
Uncheck ALL other "Allowed network protocols"

Click TCP/IP Settings button
Click the Server assigned IP address
Click the Specify name server addresses
enter "198.161.243.11"for the Primary DNS
Clear the Use IP header compression
Click the Use default gateway on remote network ON
Click OK
Click OK

You now have the basic components installed in Windows 95/98/ME to connect to the CCNA PPP services.
The only item left is the Dial-up Scripting (if your using it.)

Using the CCNA PPP service, Manual Login

To login to the CCNA PPP service

Double-click My Computer icon
Double-click Dial-Up Networking folder
Double-click the CCNA PPP icon to start it

NOTE: On a Manual connection, the User name and Password asked for at this first screen is not needed. Just check the Phone number.
Click Connect button

If the modem connects, the Post-Dial Terminal Screen will appear

At calcna username: enter calcna
At calcna's password: enter calcna
At Login: enter your login name
At name's Password: enter your password
If you entered the above correctly, you will see the Welcome Screen.
Wait for a message: Enter a terminal type
1) 40 column vt100 2) PPP: [80 column vt100]
select number 2 for PPP.

When this message appears :

Type five zeroes (0) to exit.

[talking PPP, 115200 baud]

SLiRP Ready ...

you can either hit the ENTER KEY or the F7 KEY to continue.

The terminal window should disappear and after several seconds a pop-up box should appear with the "Connected to CCNA PPP" dialog box.

If you fail to connect, click Connect button and try again.

If it fails twice for any reason except Busy phone lines, Check your setup again.

You should now be connected to the CCNA PPP service.
Start up your favorite program.... ie: Netscape, Eudora, FAgent and start surfing the web.

Installing the Dial-Up Scripting program for old versions of Windows 95

Click Start button
Choose Programs, then Accessories.

If Dial-Up Scripting tool does not appear in the Accessories sub-menu, then it is not installed. To install, continue with the following instructions. If installed, jump to Configuring Dial-Up Scripting.

To install Dial-up Scripting Program

Click Start button
Choose Settings, then Control Panel and click to open.
In Control Panel window, double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon
Click Windows Setup tab
Click Have Disk... button
Click Browse button
Look on you Win95 CD under "admin", "apptools", "dscript"
Select rnaplus and Click OK
Click OK if the path and the program is correct.
Click ON the "Slip and Scripting for Dial-up Networking"
Click the Install button
Click OK when finished.

When finished, Dial-Up Scripting Tool should appear under the Programs Accessories sub-menu. To verify:
Click Start button
Choose Programs, then Accessories sub-menu.

Configuring the Dial-Up Scripting program

For Old versions of Windows 95
Click Start button
Choose Programs, then Accessories sub-menu, then Dial-Up Scripting Tool.
Single Click on the CCNA PPP connection
Click Properties button
Click Server Type button
Click the Log on to network; ON; in the "Advanced options"
Click OK
Click OK
Click the Browse button and find the "CCNA.Scp" Script that you downloaded.
(or you can get it from  The CCNA.scp Script.)
Double Click on the "CCNA.scp".
Click the "Start Minimized" ON
Click on Apply and then on Close.

- OR -

For Windows 95b, 98 or later versions:
Double-click My Computer icon on desktop.
Double-click Dial-Up Networking folder
Click once on CCNA PPP icon in Dial-Up Networking folder
Choose Properties under the File menu
Click SCRIPTING tab
Click the Browse button and find the "CCNA.Scp" Script that you downloaded.
(or you can get it from  The CCNA.scp Script.)
Double Click on the "CCNA.scp".
Click the "Start Minimized" ON
Click on Apply and then on Close.

After attaching the script in either of the above cases be sure to:
Double-click My Computer icon on desktop.
Double-click Dial-Up Networking folder
Click once on CCNA PPP icon in Dial-Up Networking folder
Choose Properties under the File menu
Click Configue button
Click Options TAB
UN-CLICK Bring up terminal window after dialing
Click OK
Click OK

The Script is now associated with the CCNA PPP connection.

To Log on with the script

Follow the same connection process as with the Manual Connection except fill in your login ID and password in the first screen.
The script will input your ID and password for you and log you completely onto the Calgary Community Network Association computer.

Click Start button
Choose Programs, then Accessories sub-menu, then Dial-Up Scripting Tool.
Single Click on the CCNA PPP connection

Choose Edit
Copy and Paste or type in the following script exactly.
