January 1995 - Calgary Free-Net Association opened its doors to the general public!!
September 1997 - Name changed to Calgary Community Network Association (CCNA) and also became designated as a Charitable Organization.
The CCNA opened its doors to the general public with 42 modem lines, all connected to 14.4 modems. As expected, the response from Calgarians, and those living within the Calgary area wishing to connect to the CCNA system, was overwhelming, leaving the modem lines jammed for the better part of any given day of the week. This has prompted several users of the system to ask whether the CCNA has plans to put more modem lines in place for better access by Members and for registered users based on their donation level.
Yes, is the quick answer. When - depends entirely upon the users of the Calgary CCNA computer system. The CCNA is a non-profit, community oriented organization providing free access to its computer system, which is linked to the Internet. For more information on the services the CCNA offers, see the link "CCNA Mandate".
In November 1996 the modem pool was increased by 4 bringing the total to 48.
Plans were in place to increase the modem pool by 4 more in 1997 but the funds were not available.
The CCNA is completely financially dependent upon individual donations, sponsorships, contributions, training course fees and funds from other fund raising ventures.
Simply put, if the users of the system do not contribute financially, the system will not be able to continue to improve. For example: One donation of $50.00 or more yearly to the Calgary Community Network Association does not even cover the monthly cost of one phone line hooked up to a modem. That cost is $67.00 plus tax per month. We have 48 phone lines to pay for per month, plus our operational costs and computer system costs.
The CCNA project was borne out of long hours of hard work put in by our volunteers and the financial contributions and sponsorships from many corporations. The Calgary Community Network Association also boasted a contingent of nearly 350 paying Members even before the system opened to the general public!
If the number of registered users on the CCNA system is any indication, thousands of people within the Calgary area already recognize the need and see the benefit of having the CCNA in our city and many are approaching the CCNA willing to volunteer time, arrange sponsorships or contribute financially with an individual donation. Such donations will receive a receipt for income tax purposes.
If you would like to help the CCNA continue to grow and expand its services, send along $20.00 or more and recieve an Charitable Donation receipt from the Calgary Community Network Association. After all, if it's the users of the system who benefit from using the CCNA, then it becomes a responsibility of the users to determine its future growth.
Note: If the money is for Internet access then no Income Tax receipt will be issued.
Support the CCNA project and become another one of the many thousands of Calgarians participating in a global movement toward a better future through advancing technologies.
