Introduction

The following instructions pertain to using the Apple Remote Access software on an Apple computer running MacOS 9x/8x/7x to connect to CCNA's  Dialup service.


System requirements

The Macintosh system requirements are:

  • PowerPC or faster processor
  • Mac OS 9x/8x/7x
  • 56K v.90 modem (recommended)
  • Apple Remote Access software (available under Control Panels)

 


Configuring Apple Talk

To configure AppleTalk:

  • Under the Apple on the menu bar, select Control Panels
  • Double-click the AppleTalk control panel
  • In the Connect via: pop-up menu, select Remote Only
  • Close the AppleTalk dialog box
  • When asked to save changes, click Save.

AppleTalk is now configured for Remote Access (see Fig.1).

Configuring TCP/IP

To configure TCP/IP:

  • Under Control Panels, open the TCP/IP control panel
  • Under File on the menu bar, select Configurations
  • Click the Duplicate button
  • In "Duplicate Configurations" dialog box, type: CCNA, and click OK
  • In "Configurations" dialog box, click the Make Active button.

You will then be returned to the TCP/IP window. The title of the window should now be "TCP/IP (CCNA)".

In the TCP/IP (CCNA) window:

  • Under the Connect via: pop-up menu, select PPP
  • Under the Configure: pop-up menu, select Using PPP Server
  • Leave the other fields blank
  • Click the close box to close the "TCP/IP ( CCNA )" window
  • When asked to save changes, click Save button.

TCP/IP is now configured for Remote Access (see Fig.3).

Configuring Modem

To make sure the correct modem is selected (see Fig.4):

  • Under Control Panels, open the Modem control panel
  • Make sure the correct modem model is selected (e.g., iMac Internal 56K) in the modem pop-up menu
    (for external modems, select "Modem Port" in Connect via: pop-up menu and then select your modem model)
  • Click the close box to close Modem dialog box
    (if asked to save settings, click Save button).

Configuring Remote Access

To configure Apple Remote Access (see Fig.5):

  • Under Control Panels, open the Remote Access control panel
  • In the Name: field, type your CCNA username
  • In the Password: field, type your CCNA password
  • Click ON Save Password
  • In the Number: field, type 403-774-5641

  • Click the Options button
  • Click the Redialing tab
  • In the Redial pop-up menu, select Redial main number and alternate numbers
  • Enter 3 times and 30 seconds between retries
  • Leave "Alternate number:" field, blank

  • Click the Connection tab and leave options blank
  • Click the Protocol tab
  • Click OFF "Allow error correction and compression in modem"
  • Click OFF "Use TCP header compression"
  • Click ON "Connect automatically when starting TCP/IP applications".

  • Click the close box to close Remote Access
  • When asked to save settings, click Save button.

Testing your connection

To test your connection:

  • Open the Remote Access control panel
  • In Remote Access window, click Connect button.

If the connection is successful, the Connect button will change to a Disconnect button and a timer will appear in the Remote Access window.

When Remote Access has connected successfully, you can begin using PPP applications such as your web browser and email program.

To quit a dialup session:

  • Click the Disconnect button in the Remote Access window to disconnect.
  • Under File on the menu bar, select Quit to quit the Remote Access application.

Creating a Remote Access alias

To make connecting to CCNA"s Dialup service easier and faster, you can use an alias to open Remote Access automatically.

To create a Remote Access alias:

  • Open your hard disk icon
  • Open the System Folder
  • Open the Control Panels folder
  • Locate the Remote Access control panel and click ONCE on the icon to select it
  • Under File on the menu bar, select Make Alias
  • Drag the Remote Access alias from control panels to the Desktop
  • Close all folders.

To open Remote Access, just double-click the alias Remote Access alias on the Desktop.

 


Troubleshooting

If repeated dialup attempts fail, you may have entered your CCNA username or password incorrectly; re-enter your username and password and try again. If the CCNA username and password are correct, check the other settings.

If a dialup attempt connects and then quits or the connection is unreliable, your modem settings may need changing. In the modem settings, try selecting a higher port speed or disable AutoDetect. Under the Modem control panel, try selecting a different modem model.

If you tried all the above changes but still cannot connect, contact CCNA.
