Calgary Community Network Association FAQ

What is a Dial-up program? A dial-up program is any program that will tell your modem to dial up to the Calgary Community Network Association and connect.

Where would I get one?
You likely already have one on your computer, since most computers have one as part of the basic software. Therefore:

If you don't have one on your computer, any computer store should be able to help you.

What modem speed do I need?
The Calgary Community Network Association's modems are all 56 K, but if you have a slower modem, it will still work. It will merely negotiate down to your speed.

What is the Calgary Community Network Association?
A Calgary Community Network Association (CCNA) is a non-profit organization formed as an attempt to bring the internet to the whole community.

Are you run by the University?
No. The University of Calgary is a sponsor of the Calgary Community Network Association in various ways, but we are completely separate.

Is my donation tax deductible?
The Calgary Community Netwrok association has been given a non profit charitable status by Revenue Canada. As such, the fees paid for Internet access and membership fees are not tax deductable unless you can use it as a business expense. However donations to the Calgary Community Network association are tax deductable.

What is a vanity ID?
That's an ID that you get to chose personally, rather than being stuck with a variation of your last name. Some businesses have these. The Calgary Community Network Association gives these to show our appreciation to our extra special donors who give $25 over and above everything.

What if mail is sent to me and my computer isn't on?
It doesn't matter whether your computer is on or not. When someone sends you a message, it is put in your "mailbox" on the central computer of the Calgary Community Network Association. You then log in to your account anytime you like, and your mail will be there waiting for you.

What's the difference between a home page and a web page?
Essentially they're the same thing. A home page is usually the main "page" of a person or organization, but the terms are often used interchangeably.

What's a web page?
A web page is a common kind of "page" of information on the internet. One of it's main advantages is that it let you put "links" to any other page on the internet. Since this makes the whole arrangement interconnected, it's compared to a "world wide web".

Should I give someone my credit card number over the internet.
Unless you are using special software on your computer, anything you send through the internet conceivably be read. Even with special software, giving out credit card numbers is always risky, and might be best avoided.

What's my e-mail address?
Your e-mail address is your_username@calcna.ab.ca
So, if you login as jsmith, your email address would be jsmith@calcna.ab.ca
