As a registered user of the CCNA you can access various sites using a procedure known as "bookmarks". Each user on the CCNA system has access to "bookmarks" by pressing the V (view) key. If you have bookmark(s) set up, they will show up on your screen once you press the V key. If you don't have any "bookmarks", you will get a message saying that no bookmarks are setup.
If you do not have any bookmarks established, get at least one set up. One of the most used functions is e-mail, so set up a bookmark to get into the e-mail function. Put the blinking cursor or highlight is on the following link:
PINE - Electronic Mail And Newsgroup Reader
Press the A (add) key and look at the information that appears at the bottom of your screen. This is a link to the e-mail and newsgroup reader so press the letter L (link) key and the message "Done!" will appear. You have now set up a bookmark to PINE. That's all there is to it. Now - anytime you want to set up a bookmark, just follow this procedure:
1. Highlight or put the blinking cursor on the link to add to the bookmark file
2. Press A to add and L because its a link.
It can usually be done on any 'link' that the blinking cursor or highlight is on.
Lets say, however, you want to get to a site but there is no 'link' for you to bookmark. This happens when you want to go directly to a web site. The following is a site from which you can get picture files:
http://aazk.ind.net/animal_gifs/
There are 2 ways to accomplish this:
1. The easiest way. Go to the site using the "GoTo user specified URL" from the Main Menu and enter the URL for the site to explore. When in the site press A (add) and D (document) to bookmark the address of the currently open document. The message "Done!" will appear to indicate the site has been added to the bookmark.
2. Another way - go into PINE and press the C (compose) a message. In the "To :" field, type in your own user id. Then press the Enter/Return key until your blinking cursor is in the "Message Text" field. To add the above site to you bookmark, type the following line:
<LI><a href="http://aaazk.ind.net/animal_gifs/">ANIMAL PICTURES</a></LI>
Should you want to get to the www site known as:
www.sony.com
you would type the following line:
<LI><a href="http://www.sony.com">SONY</a></LI>
or, if you want to telnet to say, the Edmonton Freenet, you would type in the following line:
<LI><a href="telnet://freenet.edmonton.ab.ca">EDMONTON FREENET</a></LI>
You may include several sites by typing each site on a subsequent line.
If you have created a signature file, delete your signature from the e-mail message you are sending yourself. Delete it by using the CTRL key and the letter K (shown as ^K on the bottom of the screen). The message text must include only the site(s) to be added to the bookmark file.
Now send the message to yourself. You may have to exit PINE before this e-mail message will show up in your INBOX. Re-enter PINE. Press the letter I (index). The message should be there, if not wait a bit longer (usually it's the last message listed.)
Highlight the message and press Enter/Return. The message will appear on your screen. Press the V key (View Attach). The highlight should now be on a line that says:
1 - 1 lines TEXT (or more lines if more than one site is added)
Now press the S to save the file to your home directory. You are asked to name a file you want this message saved to. Type in exactly:
lynx_bookmarks.html
If you already have a bookmark file with this same name, a message will tell you:
"FILE ".../lynx_bookmarks.html" already exists. Overwrite or append to it?"
If this message appears, you will want to append (add to your book- marks). Press the A key to append to your bookmark file. DO NOT press O (overwrite your book-marks) as this will erase ALL the bookmarks in your bookmark file and replace them with the bookmark(s) in this message! Be careful as there is no recovering from this action!
To test the new bookmark, leave Pine, and from anywhere in Lynx press V to view the bookmarks, highlight the one you want to go to and press the Enter/Return key. You will then be taken directly to that particular web site. You can use your bookmark files anytime while in Lynx.
